A painting tour in France "in the footsteps of Van Gogh" we visited citadels of ancient cities, manicured fields of lavender, coifed orchards of aged olive trees and lush inner courtyard gardens. My favorites however were the spilled wild fields that grew here and there, perhaps waiting for another turn of the soil and a new crop. Native lavenders and brazen poppies mixed and mingled with golden wild oats that grew unfettered until a row of staunch poplars stopped them. This painting came from a field such as this; it reminds me of what Van Gogh perhaps could have encountered on his journey.
