I visited a historic mining town whose remains barely resemble the bustling German community it was in the late 1800’s for a day of painting. Old orchards of apple, pear and blood oranges stood among towering walnut trees and bare fields across the road were bare of the grass hay that used to grow there. I hunted for the painting that would emerge, falling into an atmosphere of long silent sounds of children playing, horses traces chinking, summer insects buzzing. Suddenly, looking across the hayfield stood the charming Curtis house, sheltered by the huge walnut trees with canyons of forest rising above. This painting is the story of a hayfield of the past, of simple times and busy laughter, of honesty and hard work and the strength to endure into other centuries with lots of stories to tell.
