About our company
Heilman Designs grew from a dream of creating and sharing art to the art of creating tools to facilitate the creation of art. Our website www.heilmandesigns.com originated in 2001 and has grown steadily.
The boxes first introduced in 2001 were designed as a request by artists like me who needed a system that protected precious pastels and oil supplies and John’s desire to accept the challenge to design boxes that would fulfill that need. The boxes needed to be handy to use for plein air and studio, acceptable for travel by vehicle and plane, good appearance, have adequate space and affordable in cost. The response from hundreds of artists using these boxes shows the Heilman Pastel and Oil box has met these criteria. The material from the wood to the hardware to the craftsmanship had to be of the best quality. Price was determined after the box was built so that we wouldn’t be confined to a cost that would influence quality. We personally make most of the hardware to assure security and durability in use. The joinery gives strength & durability under rigorous conditions and the center piano hinge insures lasting strength. The tripod coupler is counter sunk and glued into the center of the frame so as to be a low gravity, centered position for balance and stability when attached to a tripod. All boxes lock to a solid unit when opened so they can be used on tables, tailgates or even one’s lap. The easels make a lightweight, sturdy companion to the boxes.
As we photograph and paint in the field or in studio we also stay vigilant for ideas that make the creative process easier and more accessible. How can one focus on that moment in time we strive to capture in photo or painting when we have to worry about our equipment? We appreciate the camaraderie and celebrate the passion of art with artists world wide as we ship products throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, etc.
